Synopsis:
Stories are everywhere - whispering through the air, tinkering in corners, laughing in expanses, chronicling in reverberations and struggling in silences. Stories can fill us, mould us and empty us if we’re able to listen. The artistes of Still Space’s production, Clearing the Rubble, have been undergoing a process of encompassing moments in silences and movements in order to understand a multitude of stories, the discourse of narration and simply, Stories. Within the context of the original radio play by Mahesh Dattani, the team has interpreted and imagined a theatrical production, keeping the integrity of the text and the original work intact. Dattani's Clearing the Rubble looks at the journey of three humans - a journalist, a mother and a young boy, converging together in the aftermath of a natural calamity. What does it mean to be a human after a natural calamity? What does it mean to be a native or a foreigner or both at the same time in a place after a natural calamity? A performer on stage, receiving and channeling these stories through every crevice of their body?
Through extensive research, devising and explorations, our artistes have continuously attempted to feel the echoes of every contour and line that weave human identities and the complexities of human nature in extraordinary situations. The journey of the self is being understood by questioning and seeing the movements and stillnesses of the human body in situations in life and in situations framed by the stage. We ask, what would one do, what would one’s body feel if they heard a story? If they heard these stories?
